Understanding PDO

What Is a PDO Thread Lift?

PDO stands for polydioxanone — an absorbable synthetic suture material that has been used safely in surgery for decades. In a thread lift, fine PDO threads are placed under the skin using a needle to do two things: physically support and reposition sagging tissue, and encourage your body to build new collagen around the threads as they gradually absorb.

There are two main types of PDO threads. Barbed (cog) lifting threads have small barbs that grip tissue and hold it upward — they provide the immediate mechanical lift. Smooth collagen-stimulating threads have no barbs; they are placed in a mesh-like pattern to stimulate collagen over time without a physical lifting effect. Your treatment plan may use one or both, depending on your anatomy and goals.

It is important to understand that absorption and visible benefit are different timelines. The threads dissolve over several months, but the collagen your body produces in response can extend the visible improvement beyond the absorption period. Results are temporary and vary from person to person — we do not guarantee a specific longevity or exact thread count.

How It Works

Lift Today. Collagen Tomorrow.

Immediate Mechanical Lift

When barbed lifting threads are placed, their barbs grip the tissue and physically reposition it upward. This gives you a visible, though modest, lift the moment the threads are set — ideal for softening early jowling, lifting a drooping brow, or gently repositioning mild cheek laxity.

The improvement is natural-looking and proportionate to your anatomy. It is not a surgical-level lift, and it does not remove excess skin or fat. Dr. Elhorr plans placement around your facial anatomy so the lift works with your features.

Gradual Collagen Response

As the PDO threads slowly absorb over several months, your body produces new collagen around them. This collagen-stimulating effect continues to develop long after the physical lift has softened, helping the area maintain a firmer, more supported appearance over time.

Smooth threads can be added to further encourage collagen in areas where a mechanical lift is not needed but tissue quality improvement is the goal. Your plan is individualized — there is no one-size-fits-all thread count or pattern.

Areas Addressed

Where Threads Can Help

Threads can provide modest repositioning for mild to moderate laxity in several facial regions. Candidacy is individualized — not every concern in every area is suitable.

Upper Face & Brow

Modest repositioning of a drooping brow and temple-area laxity. Not a substitute for a surgical brow lift; does not remove excess skin or fat.

Midface & Cheeks

Gentle repositioning of mild cheek laxity and softening of early nasolabial folds. A natural, proportionate improvement — not a dramatic lift.

Lower Face, Jowls & Jawline

Visible but modest definition for mild to moderate jowling and early jawline softening. Does not remove excess fat or significantly loose skin.

Selected Neck Concerns

Some neck concerns — such as mild skin laxity — may be addressed in select patients. Neck skin is often thinner, so candidacy is carefully assessed and individualized. Not every neck concern is suitable for threads; Dr. Elhorr will advise you honestly.

Is It Right For You?

Candidacy & Honest Expectations

May Be a Good Fit

  • • Mild to moderate skin laxity
  • • Reasonable skin elasticity
  • • Good overall health
  • • Realistic expectations for a modest, natural improvement
  • • Not seeking a surgical-level result

May Not Be Suitable

  • • Severe skin laxity or significant excess skin
  • • Heavy jowling or substantial volume loss
  • • Expectations of a surgical-level lift
  • • Need for fat removal or skin excision
  • • Certain medical conditions (reviewed at consultation)

A thread lift is a tool for modest, natural repositioning — not a replacement for surgery when advanced laxity is present. Dr. Elhorr will assess your anatomy honestly and tell you if a thread lift is not the right approach for your goals.

Your Visit

What to Expect

Consultation & Medical Review

Your visit begins with a consultation. Dr. Ali Elhorr reviews your medical history and current medications, examines your facial anatomy and skin quality, and discusses your goals. This is where candidacy is determined and an individualized plan is built — or where you are honestly told a thread lift is not the right fit.

Marking & Numbing

Treatment areas are marked and local anesthetic is given before thread placement. The thread entry point is placed in the same numbed area. The numbing injection may briefly sting, and pressure, pulling, or tenderness can still occur. Comfort varies; additional numbing can be discussed.

Thread Placement & Assessment

Dr. Elhorr's experience guides careful selection of the tissue plane and placement technique. Threads are positioned to support and reposition tissue in harmony with your anatomy. After placement, the result is assessed and adjusted as needed.

Aftercare & Follow-Up

You receive individualized aftercare instructions and a follow-up plan. Healing varies, and your instructions are tailored to your treatment and recovery. We do not promise zero downtime — your timeline is personalized.

Important: Do not stop prescription blood thinners without your prescriber's advice. If any adjustments are needed, we coordinate with your physician. Personalized preparation instructions are provided before your visit.

Results: Thread lift — modest, natural lift for mild–moderate laxity. Filler — restores volume and smooths folds without mechanical lift. Surgical facelift — significant lift and excess skin removal.

Longevity: Thread lift — temporary and variable (months). Filler — varies by product and individual. Surgical — years (longest-lasting).

Best for: Thread lift — mild to moderate laxity with realistic expectations. Filler — volume loss and contouring. Surgical — advanced laxity requiring surgical-level correction.
